INTRODUCTION
Hi, welcome to my blog for E2, in this audio I will be discussing my thoughts and opinions on how disability is portrayed in the media! As a disabled person this is a really important topic to me.
MAIN POINTS
I believe we need to start treating those with disabilities on social media with much more respect. Thinking of people like Joshua Block (more commonly known as world of worldoftshirts) or Daniel Larson, two men who both have learning difficulties, among other struggles and are constantly mistreated online. People often harass and trick them, condemning them to the status of a ‘LolCow’. Someone who’s entire online presence has become a meme because of their eccentric behaviours – often just traits of their disabilities
Q&A
Welcome to the q&a section of this audio!
Hello diana!
Hello Rachael
What is your opinion on the ‘LolCow’ phenomenon?
Diana – “I think its really sad, I see a lot of lolcow content online and you can tell a lot of these people are being taken advantage of. It’s distressing that people live like this and the government should be more government should be more supportive.”
Do you believe that people like Daniel Larson are at fault for their treatment?
Diana – “Yes and no, Daniel Larson is a bit of a different case as he does have a history of paedophilia, however I think he’s a clear example of someone who has not received any support for his disability. Additionally I do think he likes the fame but the people who easily take advantage of him, it’s horrible to watch.”
Thank you Diana for your time it was lovely hearing your perspective.
CONCLUSION/OUTRO
I hope that you have found this segment eye opening, again this isn’t something I mention lightly, this is a very important subject for me. Being autistic myself, seeing other people with the same condition be ridiculed so blatantly is an awful thing to whiteness becoming so normalised. We as a society should look to bettering our treatment of others, and becoming more accepting of differences. Thank you for your time.
